The Australian Skin Clinic Secret to Minimising Pores

5 05 2011

Open and enlarged pores are a problem experienced by men and women alike, with the two main causes being Genetics and Age

Whilst we may not be able to treat genetics,  using the right skin care and make-up you can certainly minimise the visibility of the pores – so don’t despair, read on instead…

Ageing causes pores to become enlarged in appearance because as we lose our skin elasticity the walls of the pore lose structure. This then causes our pores to appear larger and more obvious.

So, here’s the low-down on reducing the visibility of pores:

Treatments

There are several treatments that will help open pores. At Australian Skin Clinics we favour peels, Thermage and Fraxel depending upon your skin type and the severity.

Skin Care Program

Essential Step 1: Cleansers & exfoliators
It is essential to keep your pores clean and unclogged. When dirt becomes trapped in your pores they not only expand in diameter but become more obvious because of the dirt inside them (which can become blackheads).  By keeping the pores free from bacteria and debris you’ll leave them open for receiving the right nutrients.

We recommend Skinstitut Glycolic Cleanser and Glycolic Scrub ($45 each) for people aged 35+ and ASAP Daily Cleanser  and Daily Scrub (from $45 ) for younger skin. These products contain glycolic acids which break down the ‘glue’ that holds dry dead skin onto the face, and have a bacteria killing effect also.

Essential Step 2: Serums & moisturisers
Serums and moisturisers are important for keeping the skin in tip-top condition, and protecting the skin from the environment. Add to this Vitamin C (daytime) and Vitamin A (night-time) and your newly cleansed and polished skin will drink up the nutritional boost.

We favour ASAP and Skinstitut ranges which have a selection wide enough to cater for all skin types.

Essential Step 3: Primer
This is where make-up meets magic! A pore minimising primer will form a smooth base and fill in large pores so that your foundation will glide over them. There’s nothing worse than makeup that slips into all the skin’s nooks and crannies only to further accentuate your pores. Youngblood mineral make-up primer will give your foundation an even surface and longer lasting hold.

Step 4: Foundation
Your foundation of choice should be a mineral make-up free of talc and oils. Talc and oils are notorious pore-blockers and should be avoided. Mineral make-up has a larger molecule size than products such as talc so they will not block your pores at all.
